6 Things I never told u -- The Leagues

I was swept off to BAM rose cinemas last night for a real treat. "Six things I never told you" is an eye-opening anthology on relationships, love and sexuality.

So here is the story: Six NYU film grads got together and decided to change up the "black love" perception that we most often get to see in the movie theater. They get together to discuss concepts at one member's house, pick a book off of the shelf and created an indie blockbuster. Of course, the book itself was from a powerhouse black author, "Song of Solomon" -- Toni Morrison. Each Creator blindly picks a random line from the book and uses it as inspiration for each of the six scenes, Thing 1-6.

I stifled a laugh when the first scene opened with the label, Thing 1 because I made a direct correlation to Green Eggs and Ham. I guess I hang with kids too much, lol! I was soon to see that there was nothing funny about the masterpiece that unfolded in front of me. Each scene explored and tore through myths about black love. They were experimental and abstract but held onto radical truths. I was amazed by the honesty that practically spilled off of the screen.

I don't want to ruin it for anyone who might have the chance to see it but Thing 5 was the one that shocked, surprised and forced me out of my own "lil box".

The scene is between a woman in her early 60's (played by noted actress Novella Nelson) and a 20 year old gigolo, King. I can't say very much but it should suffice to say that neither of them knew what they were walking into. The Creator crams a plethora of emotions into the 15-20 minute scene and throws the audience slightly off balance. Surprise, anger, lust, embarrassment and revenge plunge into the audience as each person finds a part of themselves in each character. Then, just as quickly it ends with such unexpected tenderness and sense of understanding. In one word. Brilliant.

Just a peek into the others:

Thing 1-- Divorce/ Men have feelings, who knew?

Thing 2 -- A slighted wife/ Husband that works too much/ Cable guy -- You do the math

Thing 3 -- Black Republican/ S&M

Thing 4 -- Cheating Woman/Her blind fiancee/ His "cock" confidence

Thing 6 -- Woman/Man/Baby -- This man wants to own his thoughts. Must she know all?

There was only one showing in New York. It has been shown internationally and will show next in Virginia. The website isn't up yet but I will update as soon as I get it.
